AcuityScan vs SSL Labs

SSL Labs is the gold standard for grading a single TLS configuration. AcuityScan checks your SSL alongside seven other categories, so you see the whole site's health, not just the certificate.

SSL Labs (by Qualys) produces the most respected deep-dive grade for a single TLS endpoint, and it's free. If you're hardening one server's cipher suite and want the canonical A+ assessment, use it. AcuityScan reads your SSL and security headers as one part of a full-site audit, then ties them into a single health score with the rest of your stack.

Where AcuityScan goes further

  • Seven categories beyond TLS: email, DNS, performance, SEO, accessibility, privacy, and mobile.
  • Security headers, certificate expiry, and TLS findings folded into one site-wide score.
  • Monitoring that re-checks your certificate and warns you before it expires.
  • A plain-English fix and shareable report for every finding, not just a grade.

When SSL Labs is the better choice

We would rather you pick the right tool than the wrong one. SSL Labs is the better fit when:

  • You're hardening one server's TLS config and want the deepest possible cipher-by-cipher analysis.
  • You need the canonical SSL Labs grade specifically to satisfy an auditor or checklist.
  • SSL is the only thing you're assessing and a single A-F grade is all you want.

Questions

Does AcuityScan replace SSL Labs for TLS testing?
For most teams, yes. AcuityScan tests TLS 1.0 through 1.3, flags weak ciphers, validates the certificate chain, checks forward secrecy, and reads your security headers. SSL Labs still goes deeper on pure cipher-suite analysis for one endpoint, so use it when that depth is the point.
Is the AcuityScan SSL check free?
Yes. You can run a standalone SSL check or a full scan without an account. Paid tiers add monitoring, history, and white-label reports.
Does AcuityScan warn me before my certificate expires?
On the Pro tier, monitoring re-checks your saved domains and emails you when the certificate is approaching expiry, which SSL Labs does not do.
